Flashpoint (Flashpoint reading order)

The new DC reboot has really energized me back into comic book reading. Note I said reading and not collecting. Its hard to collect with two kids under the age of four. I have a tendency to leave things laying around, and then one of my kids will inevitably get it, and most likely destroy it, and I cant blame a toddler for thumbing through a book to hard, can I? Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I have read great things about the huge arc titled “Flashpoint” which soars through multiple characters and miniseries in the Flash’s universe. I am trying to broaden myself a little right now since I have been a Superman/Batman universe guy for a while. Anyway, its a tough series to get into because you cant just go buy the “Flashpoint” arc (yet) ((unless your local comic book shop bundled them)), so I looked around for a few reading lists and finally landed on this. This is how I have entered it into my Omnifocus, and you should too.

Ill keep this short. Im not going to review the new Justice League book, other than saying its great. Its a slow intro to how the heroes are meeting, and I like the approach Geoff and Jim are taking. I really just wanted to talk for a second about the reboot and what it means to me. I think the way the higher ups at DC are embracing digital media is commendable. They are hitting the challenge face on and not looking back. They are boldly saying that this is their time at DC and they are not making any apologies. Being personally affected by digital piracy, I understand the challenges of presenting things in new media formats, but the way that DC is handling it with retailers and fans, is really top notch. There are several titles that I am going to jump in on in the new 52 and I am excited to see how their venture goes. I purchased both formats of JL#1, and I enjoyed both of the very different experiences. Its been a long time since I have been able to open a book and really not know what to expect, so this is an exciting time for me with the heroes that I have grown up to love. If youre new to comics, theres never a better time than now to get started on a story. Im excited for the rest of the month. My son and I are headed to our local shop tomorrow to dive into another new book… you should too.

Why I read what I read

I would say that I read as much if not more atheistic material than theistic material. Why you might ask? Heres a few reasons.

1. Im not scared. I am not frightened of what I might discover when reading something from someone giving me an atheistic apologetic. I think there is a lot of fear from the Christian community that reading a book from Sam Harris or Dawkins, or just reading a science journal will immediately turn theists into something else. I disagree. I think there is power in knowledge, even if its knowing what someone you disagree with thinks.

2. I learn things. There is so much to learn from everyone. I have learned so much about biological evolution, cosmology, physics, and other sciences from reading such material. It is true that I dont agree with some of the conclusions that atheists draw from this science, but thats alright. Science doesnt speak. Its quiet. Scientist speak. Collins and Dawkins look at the same “evidence” and come to different conclusions. Mcgrath and Harris have read the same journals, yet disagree. I think having perspective is necessary.

3. I have to know what I believe. There are certain people that just accept things blindly. One side of a coin is enough for them. That isnt the way my mind works unfortunately. I need to be challenged. I have trouble listening to someones perspective and not seeking out an alternative point of view. I am both jealous and a troubled by the people who dont need to do this, but for me, its necessary.

4. Defense of the faith. I just simply cant see how its possible to talk to an atheist about matters that you arent familiar with. I dont think that everyone has to be a master apologist to speak to someone about faith, but a solid defense, using reason and good arguments that are grounded in research, (scientifically, philosophically) are imperative in this day and age.

Some of my favorite conversations are those held with my friends who most likely think I am a nut job for believing in the Christian God. Faith for me is a journey, not a residency. I have ups and downs, I have good days and bad days… But Im honest with myself, and I do my best to learn and study to strengthen my beliefs in the God of the Bible. We just pulled into a truck stop. Im going to go inside now.

Why I love McDonalds.

Im going to set a scene… do your best to follow. Chicago airport. Ohare. Viewing the vendors list on the big illuminated sign, I notice nothing listed about fast food. Hungry, having two hours to board my plane, I eat a what appears to be the most inexpensive restaurant in the atrium. Scanning the overpriced menu, I decide to eat a turkey club with fries. After paying my $17 dollars for my meal that was not good, nor good for me, I pass a Mcdonalds on my way to my gate. I know exactly what I would have received from Mcdonalds. Also not healthy, but it would have tasted good, and it would have cost $6. That is why I love Mcdonalds. Mediocre, yes. But its that promised mediocrity that is consistently available for a fair price wherever I go, even if its as a last resort.

And they have hot mustard.

Yesterday was a fun day. Ill make it a short post and let the pictures do the talking. We got a private tour of Pixar animation studios by John Warne’s cousin, who works there. The pictures will speak for themselves… How amazing this place is, and what a dream it would be to work in an environment like this. Life sized characters we have all grown up with, a free mile long cereal bar with a fridge full of milk. Several movie theaters, basketball courts, soccer fields, swimming pools, not to mention the foosball, pingpong, and pool tables scattered about. All of this agains the backdrop of San Francisco’s skyline. I only wished I could have shared this moment with my best little Pixar loving buddy. The whole time I was viewing the countless screenshots, test drawings, clay models, sketches of Lightning and Mater, unrendered lighting tests (all things that we weren’t allowed to photograph), I just thought how much I miss my boy. Things are only truly fun if you have amazing people to share them with. Liam was with me yesterday though… Miss you buddy.
